Excursion 1 - Trip on a steam train on the Strathspey Railway and visit to the Speyside Heather Centre (www.strathspeyrailway.co.uk) (www.heathercentre.com)

Aviemore is home to the Strathspey Railway, a company operating steam trains along a stretch of railway from Aviemore to Boat of Garten.  The steam trains are restored and maintained at a workshop in Aviemore by craftsmen and volunteers from the Strathspey Railway Association.  This excursion involves a journey by steam train followed by a visit to the Speyside Heather Centre – home to more than 300 types of heather – a species of plant, typical to the Highlands.  There is also an exhibition of historical and modern uses of heather.
