Travel Logistics and Local Information
Telluride, an historical mountain town and resort
located in the mountains of southwestern Colorado, is accessible by car
and a limited number of flights to the
Telluride Regional Airport. Most
participants will reach Telluride via the larger
Montrose
Regional Airport followed by a shuttle ride of about one hour.

Travel to and from Telluride
Each attendee is responsible for his or her own travel arrangements
to Telluride and the Mountain Village resort. In what follows,
we offer some suggestions for transportation to Telluride.
Option 1: Coach service from Denver International Airport to Telluride
(Sign up Deadline 1 June 2007)
- Attendees arriving Sunday, June 24:
We will offer round trip coach service from Denver International Airport (DIA) to Telluride for a
flat fee of $100. This option, and only this option, will be available as a menu item when
registering on the ICOLS –TSRC registration website. The buses will depart Denver on Sunday,
June 24 and return on Friday, June 29. The drive time to Telluride is approximately 6.5 hours,
but there will be two scheduled stops (~ 15 minutes in duration) to allow the riders to stretch
and buy snacks, coffee/espresso, and the like. The number of buses and departure times offered
will depend on interest in this option, but at least one bus will be reserved that will depart
from DIA no later than 1600 hrs, Sunday afternoon (24th) and return from Telluride departing no
later than 1300 hrs, Friday afternoon. Final arrangements will be made when we know how many of
you choose to ride the bus and we receive your flight information. If choosing this option, please
register and pay TSRC and submit your flight information (carrier(s), flight numbers, and arrival and
departure times) in the comment section.
If you have already registered for the Conference you can still sign up for the bus, but
you can no longer do so via the ICOLS-TSRC website. Instead, you must register by sending your flight
information (carrier(s), flight numbers, and arrival & departure times) to Jim Bergquist
(berky@boulder.nist.gov). The $100 fee will be assessed
upon your arrival in Telluride. We will hold
open this option through 1 June 2007.
All arriving passengers to DIA, whether by an international or domestic flight, will eventually
emerge into the lobby area of the main terminal on level 5 (http://www.flydenver.com/). At least 10
minutes before your bus is scheduled to depart, please gather your luggage and traveling mates and
migrate to the north end of the main terminal. We will meet just outside the doors through which
international travelers leave customs and enter the lobby area. Look for someone hoisting an ICOLS
sign. We will also alert the airport information kiosks of our meeting place, should you need any
guidance when entering the lobby. When all are accounted for, we will proceed to the bus.
- Attendees arriving late Sunday, June 24:
We recognize that some attendees may arrive too late for the last scheduled bus departure at 1600 hrs.
However, if you would still prefer the low-cost bus option, but anticipate a marginal or late arrival,
do not despair! A few local volunteers have generously agreed to remain behind to gather those attendees
arriving late Sunday and drive them to Telluride. If the known number of late arrivals is large enough,
we will charter an appropriately sized van. So, if you anticipate that your arrival will be too late to
catch the final bus, but still desire round trip service from Denver to Telluride, please proceed
as described above--register and pay TSRC and include your flight information (carrier(s), flight numbers,
and arrival & departure times) in the comment section. We will make certain that all attendees who choose
the round-trip bus option will have transportation to Telluride on Sunday.
At least 10 minutes before your ride is scheduled to depart DIA (your schedule will be sent to you by June 15,
if not earlier) please gather your luggage and traveling mates and migrate to the north end of the main terminal.
We will meet just outside the doors through which international travelers leave customs and enter the lobby area.
Look for someone hoisting an ICOLS sign. We will also alert the airport information kiosks of our meeting place,
should you need any guidance when entering the lobby. When all are accounted for, we will proceed to the car or
van and depart promptly for Telluride.
- Attendees arriving prior to Sunday, June 24:
Many of you will come early to acclimate, visit friends & colleagues, and possibly tour the labs (see below
for information on lab tours); the bus remains an option. If there is a critical mass of attendees in the
Boulder area, we will probably run a bus from Boulder to Telluride departing at 1300 hrs on Sunday, June 24,
following the morning lab tours (from 9-1200 hrs). Otherwise, attendees can take local transportation back
to DIA to catch the bus leaving at 1600 hrs. Reliable public transportation between Boulder and the airport
is provided either by the Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus service (
http://www.rtd-denver.com) or by the
Boulder Supershuttle (http://boulderexpress.com/). If there are
sufficient numbers to warrant a bus from
Boulder to Telluride, we will advise you by mid-June of where and when to meet for its departure.
Likewise, we will alert you by mid-June if there are not sufficient numbers to warrant a bus from Boulder
to Telluride, in which case you can return to DIA to catch the main ICOLS bus from DIA to Telluride. There
are two convenient methods to get between DIA and Boulder: you may either reserve a seat on the Supershuttle
($22 one way), which offers hotel pickup to a central departure point and, from there, a nonstop ride from
Boulder to DIA (roughly 1 hr), or you may choose the less expensive ($10 one way) RTD bus service between
Boulder and DIA. The AB (Airport/Boulder) buses depart downtown Boulder roughly every hour at the half-hour,
with stops at CU(JILA) and NIST a few minutes later. The AB bus schedule can be found by selecting “Skyride”
in the menu options at the RTD web site (www.rtd-denver.com). Be aware that the schedule is not strictly
hourly and that the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) schedules are different than the Monday-Friday schedule.
The AB bus makes a few stops in Boulder and a few more in route, which makes the transit time a bit longer
(roughly 1hr 15 min). The upside? Less expensive and no reservations needed. The downside? Getting your luggage
from the hotel to the bus stops.
- Friday, June 29:
As stated above, we presently plan one bus departing from Telluride for DIA no later than 1300 hrs
(box lunches will be provided). Likely, this bus will arrive in the Denver/Boulder area no earlier than
2000 hrs—which may not be in time for some flights scheduled to leave on Friday.
Therefore, for those
electing the bus option and who have a Friday late-afternoon or evening departure from DIA, we will again
enlist “volunteers” as needed to provide timely transportation to the airport. However, we strongly encourage
bus travelers to make arrangements for accommodations Friday night and to continue your journeys on Saturday.
Hotels near DIA, most of which offer free shuttle service to the airport, can be found at
(http://denver.airporthotelguide.com/). Hotels in Boulder can be found at
(
http://www.bouldercoloradousa.com/listings/index.cfm?catID=1), many of them within walking distance
(~ 1-3 km) of NIST and JILA. Saturday afternoon, June 30, might then be an excellent time to tour the
labs before continuing your travel.
- Ground Transportation between Boulder and DIA:
Reliable public transportation between Boulder and the airport is provided either by the Regional
Transportation District (RTD) bus service (http://www.rtd-denver.com)
or by the Boulder Supershuttle
(http://boulderexpress.com/). You may either reserve a seat on the
Supershuttle ($22 one way), which
offers hotel pickup to a central departure point and from there, a nonstop ride to DIA (roughly 1 hr),
or you may choose the less expensive ($10 one way) RTD bus service between Boulder and DIA. The AB
(Airport/Boulder) buses depart downtown Boulder roughly every hour at the half-hour, with stops at
CU(JILA) and NIST a few minutes later. The AB bus schedule can be found by selecting “Skyride” in the
menu options at the RTD web site (http://www.rtd-denver.com).
Be aware that the schedule is not strictly
hourly and that the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) schedules are different than the Monday-Friday schedule.
The AB bus makes a few stops in Boulder and a few more enroute, which makes the transit time a bit longer
(roughly 1hr 15 min). The upside? Less expensive and no reservations needed. The downside? Getting your
luggage from the hotel to the bus stops.
Option 2: Air service from Denver International Airport
The second option is to continue by plane to an airport closer to Telluride.
“Nearby” airports include:
There are limited numbers of flights serving these airports and seating may be at a premium, particularly on the smaller aircraft serving the Telluride and Montrose airports. The only major airport with flights to Telluride is DIA, whereas Montrose is served by Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Houston and Dallas. Although farther away, Grand Junction is larger than Telluride and Montrose and it offers more flights. If choosing this option, please be aware that you are responsible for all arrangements and costs, including the ground transportation to and from Telluride from these airports. For simplicity, we suggest that your ground transportation arrangements be made with Telluride Express (+1 970 728 6000), which serves these nearby airports with shuttle buses, vans and buses. The cost of the round trip ticket will depend on the distance between the airport and Telluride. Expect to pay approximately $100 from the Montrose Airport to Telluride and back; more if you fly into Grand Junction or Cortez.
Option 3: Rental Cars
The third option is a rental car from any of the airports, (including Denver, and Salt Lake both approximately 6 1/2
hours away) but expect to pay up to $25/day for parking during your stay in Telluride.
